COMMUNITY AS REBELLION

Three years ago, Dr. Lorgia García Peña (LGP) sat down to write a letter to her students. Those words have turned into Community as Rebellion; A Syllabus for Surviving Academia as a Woman of Color, set to be published by Haymarket Books tomorrow (May 25th as an ebook and May 31st in both hardback and paperback).

“This book is both una ofrenda (an offering) to community and a call to rebellion,” writes LGP. “It comes out of a profound desire to honor the women that have made my life–as I have chosen to live it, in freedom and rebellion–possible.”

“A lifesaving and life-affirming text,” praises Angela Y. Davis. “Community as Rebellion offers us the trenchant analysis and fearless strategy radical scholar-activists have long needed.” On Wednesday (May 25, 2022) at 6PM ET, Haymarket Books will be hosting an online teach-in around Community as Rebellion with LGP, Davis, and Chandra Talpade Mohanty.

Excerpt from Community as Rebellion: “I am my mother’s dreams fulfilled, my grandmother’s vengeance realized, patriarchy’s worst nightmare, a testament to the power of anticolonial resistance. I am all they–those who stole lands and enslaved people–were afraid of and more; rebellion is my birthright. This book is an altar of words, onto which to lay collective hopes for the possibility of radical dreams, for redress, restitution, reparation, and triumph.”
